Liverpool John Moores University, UK

The new £37.6m student-centred building at Clarence Street enables LJMU to consolidate its teaching within the Mount Pleasant Campus. It will also provide a new Centre for the Liverpool Screen School.

The Screen School incorporates a professional standard Main TV studio, a smaller similarly equipped News TV Studio, four voice/audio recording booths, a fully equipped radio studio, green room, control rooms, edit suites and offices.

Drama by Design worked with the key users and stakeholders to design and specify all the technical systems including cameras, broadcast/video systems, studio lighting, sound systems, curtains and tracks, network media server, electronic news gathering system, edit suites and communications. All systems have been designed to not only be used by the University staff and students but also to be of a standard suitable for hiring out to professional television companies in the area.

A range of cameras have been provided included Sony HD cameras on stands in the studio and hand held camcorders for outside broadcast work. In addition a number of 3D cameras have been provided to enable the students to gain some experience utilising the latest equipment.

All spaces are linked to a central Editshare media storage system enabling access to recorded media from anywhere in the building.
